Toronto Sun founding editor Peter Worthington has passed away at age 86.
Worthington began his newspaper career as a news reporter for the Vancouver Province in 1954. He later moved to Ontario to complete a journalism degree at Carleton University and joined the staff at the Toronto Telegram as a reporter. He spent 15 years at the Telegram covering revolutionary wars and humanitarian crises around the world—travelling throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
When the Telegram folded in 1971, Worthington partnered with Doug Creighton and Don Hunt to start the Toronto Sun with over 60 former Telegram staff members. Worthington served as executive editor and then editor-in-chief at the daily paper for 12 years. He later went on to work at the Financial Post as a columnist before becoming the inaugural editor at the Sun’s newly launched sister publication, the Ottawa Sun, in 1988.
Over the course of his career, Worthington received four National Newspaper Awards, a National Newspaper Citation and was named to the Canadian News Hall of Fame.
