Gazette expands breaking news coverage online, refocuses print edition on analysis

In a note to Montreal Gazette readers, publisher Alan Allnutt announced that the paper will be making some changes to its editorial content in the coming weeks. In print, the Gazette will move away from breaking news coverage and feature more community news, insight, investigation and human interest stories. Online, the Gazette’s website will be updated and improved to provide easier navigation and increased national and international breaking news coverage. Read more »

Great West Newspapers to open new printing facility next summer

Alberta-based Great West Newspapers, publisher of over 20 community newspapers including the St. Albert Gazette, has signed an agreement with Postmedia to outsource printing of the Edmonton Journal. The daily paper will be printed at Great West Newspapers' new printing facility which is expected to open in summer 2013. The plant will be anchored by a Colora press from Koenig & Bauer AG. Researchers and economists can now gain valuable insights into the status of the Canadian newspaper industry with our new subscription package providing access to top-line linage data from over 60 daily newspapers. Each month, newspapers from across Canada contribute confidential data about their advertising volumes to Newspapers Canada’s Linage system. Non-participating newspapers and other organizations can now access top-line only advertising data from our system via our new linage subscription package, providing an exlusive opportunity to mine the data and unlock future trends. All aboard! NewsTrain pulls into Toronto this September

There are just three weeks left to register for the renowned NewsTrain educational series, coming to Toronto on September 13-14. Entry deadline for EPPY Awards is August 31

Newspapers are invited to enter Editor & Publisher’s 2012 EPPY Awards celebrating media-affiliated websites. The annual awards program, now in its 17th year, is open to media organizations from around the world and features over 30 different award categories including Best News Website, Best Mobile Website, Best News Video and Best News Blog. Natalie Stechyson has been named the winner of the 2012 Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism. Stechyson recently graduated from Carlton University and has held reporting and editing roles at Postmedia News, The Globe and Mail and The Telegraph-Journal. Read more »
