Four more Postmedia papers launch metered paywalls

The Ottawa Citizen, Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Province and the National Post are the latest Postmedia-owned papers to introduce paywalls for their digital content on the web and mobile devices. Using a metered model, newspaper readers will now be able to view up to 15 free articles every 30 days, after which they will receive an automatic prompt to purchase a digital subscription package. Non-subscribers will still have access the newspaper’s homepage, breaking news and blogs. Read more »

Black Press owner David Black proposes $13-billion refinery in BC

Canadian publishing mogul David Black is considering a business opportunity outside of the newspaper industry with a proposal for a $13 billion oil refinery near Kitimat, BC. Black is the founder and owner of Black Press Inc. which currently owns over 150 community and daily newspapers in Western Canada and the United States. Read more »

Canadian Media Circulation Audit (CMCA) is excited to announce the launch of a new and improved website. The updated site includes a fresh new look and a number of innovative features to enhance the user experience. The new site will be rolled out in two phases over the course of 2012. Read more »

Yogurt newspaper campaign shows how print can enhance TV advertising

Newspapers Canada highlights research from around the world to offer a global perspective on newspaper innovation. Our latest case study is from Jalna yogurt in Australia. When the company added newspaper advertising to its existing television campaign, consumer commitment and intent to trial increased by 56 percent and sales grew by eight percent. Read more »

Postmedia Network announces new location for Toronto headquarters

Postmedia Network has chosen 365 Bloor Street East as the location of its new headquarters in downtown Toronto. The 19-storey commercial property will house Postmedia’s corporate head office, integrated advertising and digital groups, and the National Post. Read more »

Campus Plus seeking an advertising professional to serve on its board of directors

Campus Plus, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Canadian University Press, is seeking an advertising professional to serve on its board of directors as the Industry Representative. The Industry Representative is a non-voting director and serves as an advisor to the board. The position is an unpaid volunteer position and the Campus Plus board meets approximately four times per year. Read more »

CAJ, Centennial College and The Sports Group team up to host sports journalism panel

Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ), Centennial College and The Sports Group have partnered up to present Fast Break, a panel discussion designed to educate students and professionals about the sports journalism industry. On September 18, industry representatives will come together at Centennial College in Toronto share their struggles and success stories as well as give advice on breaking into sports journalism. People

There have been a number of staff changes to The Globe and Mail's senior management this week. David Walmsley is leaving his position as managing editor to become the director of news content for CBC News. Walmsley is an award-winning journalist who has worked at The Globe and Mail since 2006. Replacing Walmsley as managing editor will be Report on Business (ROB) editor Elena Cherney. Former ROB managing editor Derek DeCloet will replace Cherney as the new ROB editor. Finally, a new position of editor of news and sport has also been created for Sinclair Stewart, who has been national editor for The Globe since 2009. Read more »

Marty Beneteau, publisher and editor in chief of the Windsor Star, has been awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his commitment to his community and the field of journalism. Beneteau has worked as a journalist for over 30 years and has been lauded recently for his contributions toward developing the Star’s new state-of-the art news operations building which is currently under construction. London Community News (ON) reporter Mary Baxter has been named the recipient of this year’s International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) Star Prize for print journalism. Baxter received the prize for an article on Lyme disease that appeared in a May 2011 issue of Better Farming magazine, where she holds the position of field editor. Read more »
