Three Canadian newspapers nominated for Online Journalism Awards

The Globe and Mail, Edmonton Journal and Toronto Star are among the finalists at this year’s Online Journalism Awards. Launched in 2000, the annual awards are hosted by the Online News Association (ONA) to recognize excellence in digital journalism on an international scale. The final winners will be announced at the upcoming ONA Conference on September 22, in San Francisco. FOI Audit to be released during RTK Week in September

Newspapers Canada will release its seventh annual National Freedom of Information (FOI) Audit and related materials during Canadian Right to Know Week, taking place September 24- 28, 2012. The annual FOI Audit provides a unique opportunity to compare the performance of institutions across Canada. The results of the audit are presented in an accountability report card, revealing which government departments are lagging when it comes to being open and accountable to Canadians.  Read more »

Newspapers have just two days left to submit their websites and digital offerings for the 2012 EPPY Awards. Each year, Editor and Publisher hosts the international awards program to honour media-affiliated websites from around the world. Now in its 17th year, the EPPY Awards feature over 30 different award categories including Best News Website, Best Mobile Website, Best News Video and Best News Blog. Read more »

ABC Life Literacy Canada reveals theme for 15th annual Family Literacy Day

ABC Life Literacy Canada has announced that the theme of the 15th annual Family Literacy Day, taking place on January 27, 2013, will be 15 Minutes of Fun! The new theme emphasizes that learning can happen anywhere, any time. Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Newspaper veteran Betty Carr has been selected by the Local Media Association (formerly Suburban Newspapers Association) as the 2012 Dean S. Lesher Award recipient in recognition of her outstanding contributions to her company, community and the local newspaper industry at large. Carr retired in May 2012 from her position as vice-president of Metroland Media Group’s Toronto division and publisher of Toronto Community News. Read more »

Pat Livingston, who retired from her position as publisher of the Lucknow Sentinel (ON) in March 2012, recently received a Silver Quill Award from the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA) in recognition of her years of industry service. Livingston first began her newspaper career in December 1977. She worked in a number of different departments over the course of her 34 years at the Sentinel--including editorial, sales and photography--before becoming the publisher of the community newspaper. Ryerson University has named Paul Woods from The Canadain Press (CP) as the Rogers Distinguished Visiting Professor in Journalism for the 2012-2013 school year. Woods has worked at CP in a number of roles including reporter, news editor and bureau chief. Most recently, Woods served as the director of human resources when the news agency moved from a private non-profit cooperative to a for-profit business back in 2010. Read more »
