Last chance to enter the 2012 Extra Awards

There are just two days left to submit your newspaper advertisements for the 2012 Extra Awards. All entries must be submitted by Friday, June 29 in order to be eligible for this year’s competition. The annual awards program celebrates the very best in Canadian daily and community newspaper advertising. Entrants can submit both print and online ads and campaigns in a wide range of creative categories. Read more »

B.C. courts open up to texting, social media in courtrooms

Lawyers and accredited journalists will soon be able to send and receive text messages and social media alerts from within courtrooms at the B.C. Supreme Court. Previously, the use of personal electronic devices for transmitting messages from inside courtrooms was subject to the discretion of individual judges. Read more »

Postmedia sells Don Mills headquarters for $24 million

Postmedia Network has entered into an agreement to sell its Toronto headquarters to The Rose & Thistle Group Ltd. for $24 million. The property, located at 1450 Don Mills Road, is currently home to Postmedia corporate offices and the National Post. The transaction is expected to close on September 28, 2012. Read more »

Torstar invests in new online shoppping site

Toronto Star parent company Torstar has announced it will invest in Shop.ca, a new e-commerce website targeting Canadian shoppers. The online marketplace offers millions of consumer goods from leading brands in over two dozen categories. Read more »

New advertising case study demonstrates the power of frequency

Mitsubishi wanted to launch a new, sleek electric car targeting a broad demographic. Newspapers were the perfect vehicle to provide the reach required. As well, being both a visual and copy medium, it allowed the well-designed car to be featured beside bold copy in order to deliver the message in a powerful way. Read more »

Canada Post introduces new online tool to manage Unaddressed Admail mailings

In March 2012, Canada Post introduced Precision Targeter, a free, self-serve online tool that makes it easier for newspapers to plan and manage Unaddressed Admail mailings. With the introduction of this new web-based application, publishers will no longer need to find and select desired walks from CPC’s website, write them down and then key them in their shipping tools. Deadline approaching for Grace-Pépin Access to Information Award

The nomination deadline for the Grace-Pépin Access to Information Award is Tuesday, July 3. The award honours the efforts of an individual, a group or an organization that has made a significant contribution to the promotion of access to information principles and government transparency and accountability in Canada. New address for OCNA and Ad*Reach

The offices for the Ontario Community Newspapers Association and Ad*Reach are moving. All phone numbers, fax number and email addresses will remain the same. Read more »

Sun Media launches new community paper in Quebec

Sun Media, a subsidiary of Quebecor, has launched a new bi-weekly publication in the Bois-Francs Region of Quebec. Titled L'Echo de Victoriaville, the free paper will have a circulation of 43,000. Local businessman Jean Crepeau has been appointed as the publisher of L’Echo de Vicotriaville as well as L'Impact de Drummondville. Read more »

Newspapers Canada information technology manager Andrew Powell is moving on from the organization. Powell first joined the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA) in July 2003. Following the merger of CCNA and CNA in 2008, Powell was promoted to IT Manager and has been instrumental in building and managing the Newspapers Canada website, the Community Content site, and the upcoming new website for the CMCA program. His last day is Thursday, June 28. Read more »
