Winners announced for the 2012 Extra Awards

Newspapers Canada is pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 Extra Awards. The annual awards program celebrates innovative newspaper advertising in print and digital formats. At this year’s competition, BleuBlancRouge took home a Gold award and Best of Show for its creative work in transforming the front page of The Montreal Gazette into a “Tweet Edition.” RETHINK received three Gold awards, one Bronze and two Honourable Mentions while lg2 earned two Golds and one Bronze. Finalists named for BC's Jack Webster Awards

The final nominees for the 2012 Jack Webster Awards--honouring outstanding journalism in British Columbia--have been revealed. Newspaper finalists in the various print categories include The Vancouver Sun, The Globe and Mail, Victoria Times Colonist, The Province and The Kamloops Daily News. Patricia Graham, vice-president, digital for Postmedia’s Pacific Newspaper Group, has been announced as the recipient of the Bruch Hutchinson Lifetime Achievement Award. Transcontinental increases third quarter revenues by 8%

Transcontinental Inc.'s revenues grew eight percent in the third quarter of 2012, up from $479.4 million to $517.0 million. The increase is largely due to Transcontinental’s acquisition of Quad Canada, Inc. and Redux Media, as well a number of new printing contracts and the launch of new community newspapers in Quebec. Postmedia papers integrate new Facebook commenting system

In an effort to eliminate the issues surrounding anonymous online commenters, newspapers across the Postmedia chain are introducing a new mandatory social media sign-in commenting system for online articles. Readers wishing to leave a comment on an article will now be required to identify themselves by logging into their Facebook account. Facebook names and profile photos will be displayed alongside all published comments. Read more »

Celebrate Right to Know Week September 24-28

Right to Know Week will take place in Canada from September 24-28, 2012. This year marks the seventh year that Canadians have celebrated Right to Know Week, an initiative designed to raise awareness about people’s right to access government information and to promote freedom of information as essential to both democracy and good governance. In conjunction with this important campaign, Newspapers Canada will release its seventh annual National Freedom of Information (FOI) Audit and related materials during Right to Know Week. Humorist and former newspaper editor Garth Thomas has passed away at age 77. Thomas' journalism career as a radio personality and newspaperman in Huntsville, Ontario spanned over 50 years.  Read more »

Stéphane Le Gal is expanding his role within Postmedia to become the new vice-president of advertising sales for both The Gazette in Montreal and the Ottawa Citizen. Le Gal first joined the Gazette in 2007 and was appointed vice-president of sales and marketing in November 2010. Read more »

Alain Tascan has been appointed to the board of directors of Transcontinental Inc. Tascan is currently the president and CEO of Sava Transmedia, a publisher and developer of social gaming online and on mobile platforms. Read more »

William Marsden, senior investigative reporter for The Gazette, has been named the U.S. correspondent for Postmedia News. Marsden will relocate to Washington, D.C. to cover Capitol Hill for Postmedia newspapers. Read more »

The Edmonton Journal is introducing two new columnists. Fish Griwkowsky has been named the Journal’s new visual arts columnist while Michael Hingston will join the Alberta daily as the new books columnist. Read more »
