Newspapers among the big winners at the 2012 Canadian Online Publishing Awards

Five Canadian daily newspapers from across the country were honoured at an awards ceremony for the 2012 Canadian Online Publishing Awards held in Toronto on October 22.

The National Post received gold in the Best Companion Website category and earned both gold and silver in the Best Use of Social Media category for its Gastropost website and overall social media initiatives respectively.

The Globe and Mail won gold for Best Digital Edition (replica) and silvers for Best Companion Website and Best Website Design.

Toronto Star—which led the list of finalists with 14 nominations—earned silver in the Best News Coverage category for Shooting, Flooding, Federal Budget; silver in the Video/Multimedia Feature category for Somalia: Where Famine Is a Crime; and silver in the Best Data Visualization category for a special section titled Known to Police.

La Presse earned gold for Des mosquées et des hommes in the Best Video/Multimedia Feature category

Edmonton Journal won silver in the Best Cross-Platform Initiative category for its Ebook titled How Could a Whole Town Burn?

The annual awards program, now in its fourth year, is hosted by Masthead and recognizes Canada’s best editorial and design work in digital publications including websites, tablet editions, digital replicas and apps.
