Laura-Julie Perreault from La Presse wins Canadian Nieman Fellowship

Laura-Julie Perreault, a staff reporter at La Presse, has been selected as the 2014 Martin Wise Goodman Canadian Neiman Fellow. Perreault, along with 11 other foreign journalists, will be given the opportunity to study at Harvard University for one year. During her fellowship, Perreault intends to study issues facing female combatants as well as state building and democratization in post-dictatorial states.

Veteran newspaper editor Neil Reynolds dies at 72

Renowned newspaper editor and columnist Neil Reynolds has passed away at age 72. Beginning his journalism career in the mid-1970s, Reynolds worked in newsrooms across Ontario and eventually rose to city editor at the Toronto Star before being appointed as the editor of the Kingston Whig-Standard in 1977. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s Reynolds served as editor for numerous daily publications across the country including the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal, Saint John Times-Globe, the Ottawa Citizen and the Vancouver Sun.

Newfoundland political columnist Ray Guy dies at 74

Newfoundland and Labrador newspaper columnist and author Ray Guy died last week at age 74. Guy was well known for his satirical columns of the 1960s and early 70s which appeared in the St. John’s Telegram and covered political news and current events in the region.

Toronto Star arts columnist Greg Quill dies at 66

Greg Quill, a long time entertainment critic for the Toronto Star, passed away on Sunday, May 5 at 66-years-old.

Prior to becoming a journalist, Quill established a successful music career in Australia with his critically acclaimed roots band Country Radio. Quill received a grant from the Australian Council for the Arts in 1974 which enable him to move to Toronto where he began writing for local media about music and arts.

He joined the staff at the Toronto Star in 1984 as an arts and entertainment reporter and went on to become a books columnist.

Journalism veteran Peter Worthington dies at age 86

Toronto Sun founding editor Peter Worthington has passed away at age 86.

Worthington began his newspaper career as a news reporter for the Vancouver Province in 1954. He later moved to Ontario to complete a journalism degree at Carleton University and joined the staff at the Toronto Telegram as a reporter. He spent 15 years at the Telegram covering revolutionary wars and humanitarian crises around the world—travelling throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

When the Telegram folded in 1971, Worthington partnered with Doug Creighton and Don Hunt to start the Toronto Sun with over 60 former Telegram staff members. Worthington served as executive editor and then editor-in-chief at the daily paper for 12 years. He later went on to work at the Financial Post as a columnist before becoming the inaugural editor at the Sun’s newly launched sister publication, the Ottawa Sun, in 1988.

Over the course of his career, Worthington received four National Newspaper Awards, a National Newspaper Citation and was named to the Canadian News Hall of Fame.

Four Postmedia publishers to leave the newspaper chain

Four publishers at Postmedia-owned daily newspapers across Canada have announced that they will be departing from the media organization: National Post publisher Doug Kelly; John Connoly from the Edmonton Journal; Guy Huntingford, from the Calgary Herald; and Marty Klyne of Saskatoon StarPhoenix and Regina Leader-Post.

Harry Bruce to receive AJA Lifetime Achievement Award

The Atlantic Journalism Awards has named veteran journalist Harry Bruce as the recipient of its 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award. The annual honour is bestowed upon an individual who has demonstrated a lifetime of dedication to journalism excellence in Atlantic Canada.

Bruce began his journalism career in 1955 as a beat reporter for the Ottawa Journal. He has written extensively as a columnist and reporter for numerous national and regional newspapers and magazines and has also anchored a current affairs program for CBC-TV Halifax.

Celia Ste Croix joins Whitecourt Star in Alberta

Celia Ste Croix has joined the staff at the Whitecourt Star in Alberta. Ste Croix comes to the Sun Media community newspaper having recently graduated from the journalism program at Concordia University in Montreal where she worked with the layout team for The Concordian.

Kevin Ma named Journalist of the Year by Local Media Association

Kevin Ma from the St. Albert Gazette in Alberta was named the first place winner in the Journalist of the Year category at the Local Media Association awards. Ma received first place awards in four categories at the annual competition: best column writing, best feature writing, best breaking news story and best environmental coverage.
