Catherine Solyom, a reporter for the Montreal Gazette, has been awarded a research grant from the Fédération Professionnelle des Journalistes du Québec (FPJQ). Solyom will use the grant money to travel to Chile and Argentina in the coming months to research the social and environmental impact of a Canadian gold mine in the Andes Mountains.
The annual award funds travel and research expenses for journalists covering issues of human, social and environmental interest in developing countries. Solyom was one of two Quebec journalists who received the $6,000 Bourse Nord-Sud, which is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency.
The other recipient of this year's FPJQ grant is freelance writer Marc-André Sabourin. Sabourin will use the prize money to study the health and ecological repercussions of decommissioning weaponry in Russia.
