Amateur sports journalist Martin Cleary is retiring from the Ottawa Citizen. Cleary first joined the Citizen almost 40 years ago as a summer student. He went on to become a full-time sportswriter and has covered the more than 30 editions of the Ottawa Marathon and six Olympic Games over his career at the daily paper.

In 1982, Cleary was awarded the Doug Gilbert Award and in 2007 he was given the Ottawa Sports Awards lifetime achievement award for sports media
