Newfoundland government passes Bill 29 to amend Access to Information laws

Following approximately 70 hours of filibuster debate, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador has passed a new Bill to amend the current Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act. With the passing of Bill 29, freedom of information requests for ministerial briefings and information that ministers deem “frivolous, systemic or repetitive” can now be exempted. The changes to the access-to-information laws in the province may make it substantially harder for journalists and other groups to obtain information connected to government decision-making.
