Total community newspaper advertising revenue in 2011 is more than $1.2 billion, a 3.1% increase over 2010, according to the latest annual revenue survey conducted for the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA).
Print advertising revenue represents the majority of revenue at more than $1.1 billion and the balance is online revenue at $43.7 million. Both print and online revenue have increased over 2010, with online revenues soaring 35.6% over last year.
Circulation revenue remains fairly flat compared to 2010 at almost $43 million. This represents an increase of 0.5% over last year. Increases were noted in all provinces/territories except Ontario, Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories.
The survey was conducted among community newspapers across Canada in early 2012. Data was collected from a number of sources, including the corporate chains, independently owned newspapers, and regional newspaper associations affiliated with the CCNA.
This year the study scope was expanded to include revenue from flyers/inserts as well as print advertising revenues in national, local and classified categories, online revenues and circulation revenues.
