Expanded INK+BEYOND program includes many value-added events

In just two weeks, hundreds of delegates representing daily and community newspapers from across the country will congregate in Toronto to attend INK+BEYOND 2012. In addition to innovative speaker presentations and educational workshops, this year's conference program features a number of value-added activities including an expanded trade show, networking opportunities, prestigious awards galas and two additional industry conferences. Great Idea Awards winners announced

Newspapers Canada is pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 Great Idea Awards. This year's competition drew a record 371 entries from 60 daily and community newspapers from across the country. The judges for the 2012 Extra Awards have been revealed. Newspapers Canada has hosted the annual awards program for over 20 years and we are dedicated to continue celebrating outstanding newspaper advertising in print, online, tablet and mobile phones. Canada AM anchor Jeff Hutcheson will host CCNA gala on Thursday, April 26

Next week’s FREE webinar focuses on multimedia excellence

For the third year in a row, Newspapers Canada has invited the finalists in the multimedia feature category of the National Newspaper Awards to lead an inspiring webinar on Multimedia Excellence. On Tuesday, April 17, Randy Risling and Michelle Shepard from the Toronto Star, Patty Brooks and Eric Wynne from the Halifax Chronicle Herald and Stephen Northfield from The Globe and Mail will discuss how their outstanding NNA-nominated multimedia projects came together and what resources were used to create them. Help raise awareness for World Press Freedom Day on May 3

In order to raise awareness about World Press Freedom Day on Thursday, May 3, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has launched a selection of editorial and advertising materials for use by newspapers. The package includes essays, infographics, political cartoons and young reader materials. Read more »

NewsTrain training workshop comes to Toronto this September

Newspapers Canada and Metroland Media Group are teaming up with Associated Press Media Editors (APME) to bring the renowned NewsTrain training series to Toronto this September. NewsTrain features two full days of educational workshops for managers and editors by some of the best journalism practitioners in North America—all for just $50 per person (plus HST). The topics covered will include video and social media as well as newsroom management issues. Read more »

TC Media buys Edition Beauce

In an effort to broaden its Quebec community paper network, TC Media Transcontinental has purchased regional newspaper Édition Beauce (previously Journal de Beauce-Nord). Édition Beauce has a circulation of 57,400 and is distributed in an area covering the southern suburbs of Metro Quebec City (Saint-Lambert) to the town of Saint-Georges.  Read more »


Ontario newspaperman Bill Allen has passed away at age 61. Allen was regional general manager of the Huntsville Forester, Bracebridge Examiner, Gravenhurst Banner, Parry Sound North Star, Almaguin News and North Bay Nipissing News. Read more »

Five individuals will be recognized with lifetime achievement awards at the upcoming Newspapers Atlantic conference. The regional association’s board of directors unanimously voted to honour Bill Bowman, Carbonear Compass; Frank MacDonald, Invernss Oran; Fred Hatfield, Yarmouth County Vanguard; Heather Moore, Montague Eastern Graphic and Maurice Aube, Bathurst Northern Light. The Canadian Journalism Foundation has announced that Tamara Baluja, a national reporter with The Globe and Mail, is the winner of the 2012 Greg Clark Award for early career journalists. The award is designed to offer a young journalist the chance to gain deeper insight into his or her beat. As part of her prize, Baluja wil have the opportunity to spend up to a week visitng a First Nations school in a remote community in British Columbia. Read more »

Jean-Charles Rocha is leaving his position at Cossette Media to join La Presse as the Montreal daily newspaper’s new senior director of creativity and research. In his new role, Rocha will be responsible for directing the creative media team and leading research in the development of innovative advertising concepts and cross-platform marketing strategies.
