The Globe and Mail to introduce metered paywall this fall

The Globe and Mail has announced that it will launch a metered subscription service for its online content starting this fall. As with other metered paywalls, readers will be able to access a certain number of free online articles each month before they are asked to pay. The subscription model will also extend to the newspaper’s mobile site and apps. Details about the number of free articles available per month and pricing have not yet been released. Read more »

Hamilton Spectator wins award for health and poverty series

The Hamilton Spectator has been recognized by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada and the Canadian Foundation for Women's Health for its series, BORN: A Code Red Project. The investigative series exploring the link between poverty and the health of mothers and babies was named print journalism series of the year by the two health organizations. Read more »

The annual awards program is open to all newspapers (daily and community), advertisers, agencies and freelancers. Newspapers Canada Credit Conference inspires collaboration among all media

On May 9-10, Newspapers Canada held its first all-media Credit Conference in Mississauga, ON. All media were invited to attend, including representatives from newspapers, TV, radio, magazines and outdoor. During the two-day conference, delegates shared their opinions on a variety of topics and common challenges related to credit while a range of industry experts offered their insights on new credit and collection software development. The Michener Awards Foundation has announced the winners of the two Michener-Deacon Fellowships for 2012. The Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education has been awarded to Melanie Coulson from the Ottawa Citizen and the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism has been given to freelance journalist Laura Eggertson. After 12 years with The Canadian Press, Angela Pacienza is leaving her position as director of online news at the newswire service to join The Globe and Mail. She will take on the role of executive producer, digital video at daily paper. Read more »
