E-Reader conference focuses on revenues and readers

Personalization, engagement, and monetization were the primary themes of the International Newsmedia Marketing Association (INMA) second annual e-Reader conference last month in London. Sessions explored how to make content relevant within the digital environment, how to respond to or engage with consumers, how to make and retain profit and brand identity, and which models will best serve businesses and consumers. There are 21% more print newspapers today that there were in 1970! Google researched the influence of print, digital and social in today’s purchase decisions and found newspapers (including inserts) in the top three (with TV and direct mail)! BarZ Adventures has joined Newspapers Canada as a sustaining/associate member. Based in Austin, Texas, BarZ Adventures designs and develops multimedia, location-aware smartphone apps. Entries open for Jack Webster Awards

Applications for the 2012 Jack Webster Awards are being accepted until the June 30th deadline. Categories include multimedia, commentator of the year, news (one each for print, radio and TV), feature (print, radio and TV), science, technology, health and environment, legal journalism, community, business, industry and economics, and Chinese language. EXTRA Awards deadline this month

The deadline is fast approaching for the 2012 Extra Awards. Newspapers Canada invites you to enter your outstanding print and digital newspaper ads before the June 29 deadline. The annual awards program celebrates outstanding advertising in newspapers across all media: print, online, tablet and mobile phone. The contest is open to all newspapers (daily and community), advertisers, agencies and freelancers. Read more »

Newspapers Canada's archive of webinars provides low-cost training without leaving your desk. The range of topics covers everything from writing headlines and obituaries to ad layout and sales ideas. The one-hour sessions are available for download for viewing individually, or in the boardroom with a group of colleagues. The webinars offer low-cost training alternatives for new hires or to inspire current staff. Read more »

Register now for NewsTrain in Toronto

Associated Press Media Editors (APME) is bringing the renowned NewsTrain training series to Toronto on September 13-14, 2012. Co-sponsored by Newspapers Canada and Metroland Media Group, the Toronto event is open to all levels of newsroom editors and managers, reporters, copy editors, visual journalists, and online producers. Chris Williams has been appointed president of the Interactive Advertising Bureau in Canada, taking over the helm from Paula Gignac, who announced her departure earlier this year.

Cartoonist Jim Unger, best known for his Herman comic strip which appeared in newspapers across the country, has died at his home in Saanich, BC at the age of 75. Born in London, England, Unger immigrated in 1968 to Canada, where his cartooning career began at the Mississauga Times in Mississauga, ON. Read more »

Paul House has been appointed Director of Business Development at Black Press. Paul began his media career in the UK over 24 years ago and was most recently Associate Director - National Sales and Business Development for Trinity Mirror. Read more »

Karsten Johansen recently has taken on the role of general manager at the Elliot Lake Standard and the Espanola Mid-North Monitor, following the death of Ray Ethelston in a snowmobile accident in February. Johansen was most recently publisher of Sudbury Northern Life. Read more »

Ben Kroeker, the former owner and publisher of the Deloraine (Manitoba) Times & Star passed away on Thursday, May 17, at Hamilton General Hospital at the age of 74. Read more »
