TC Media takes full ownership of Metro Montréal

TC Media Inc. a subsidiary of Transcontinental Inc., has become the sole owner of Metro Montréal and all of the title’s interactive platforms. The free commuter daily, which attracts over 245,000 readers a week, was previously owned by a group composed of Metro International, Transcontinental Inc. and Gesca. Read more »

Newfoundland government passes Bill 29 to amend Access to Information laws

Following approximately 70 hours of filibuster debate, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador has passed a new Bill to amend the current Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act. With the passing of Bill 29, freedom of information requests for ministerial briefings and information that ared deemed “frivolous, systemic or repetitive” can now be exempted. Read more »

The Press and The Courts Volume 31, Issue 2 is out now

The latest issue of The Press and The Courts is now available online. The current issue looks at a variety of legal issues affecting the media including defamation, publication bans, access to records and the right to gather news. Deadline extended for Canadian Online Publishing Awards

The deadline for the Canadian Online Publishing Awards (COPA) has been extended until Friday, June 29. The annual awards program honours digital publishing and innovation in a variety of categories. English and French-language daily and weekly newspapers are all invited to enter their websites, blogs, multimedia features, social media, e-newsletters cross platform initiatives and other digital projects for this year's competition. INMA audience summit takes place October 4-5 in Chicago

The International Newsmedia Marketing Association (INMA) will host its annual Audience Summit in Chicago on October 4-5. The conference will feature a number of industry speakers who will share their insights and provide delegates with the tools they need to grow audiences across all platforms. Correction for News on News – June 13, 2012

In the June 13, 2012 edition of News on News, an item titled “Victoria Times Colonist wins 2011 Michener Award” incorrectly identified Glacier Media-owned newspaper the Victoria Times Colonist as a Postmedia publication. Vancouver-based Glacier Media Inc. purchased the daily newspaper from Postmedia in October 2011. Newspapers Canada apologizes for the error.

Industry veteran Malcolm Kirk has been named the new president of The Canadian Press . Kirk previously served as Postmedia News, executive vice-president, digital where he was responsible for the strategic direction of Postmedia's digital properties, including its news websites, mobile and tablet applications. After five years as the editor for the Winnipeg Free Press, Margo Goodhand is resigning from her position effective July 31. Goodhand first joined the newspaper in 1991 and worked as a columnist, copy editor and deputy editor of special projects, before becoming the paper’s first female editor in 2007. Read more »

Current and former staff members from the Toronto Star have been honoured with Diamond Jubilee Medals. Education reporter Louise Brown, former disabilities reporter Helen Henderson and former photographer Boris Spremo were among the 600 individuals honoured at a gala event held in Toronto on June 18. There have been a number of recent changes to the board of directors for the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA). Newspapers Atlantic has named Fred Fiander from the Western Nova Scotia News Group as its second board representative. The Quebec Community Newspapers Association (QCNA) has appointed Steve Bonspiel from The Eastern Door as its newest board representative. And the BC and Yukon Community Newspaper Association (BCYCNA) has appointed Chuck Bennett, group publisher for Black Press Kootenay Region, as its fourth board representative. Read more »
