Federal Court of Canada rules on hyperlinks

The Federal Court of Canada has ruled that posting hyperlinks linking to authorized materials falls within the law and does not constitute unauthorized communication or copyright infringement. The court determined that news aggregators, bloggers and other third-party individuals who re-publish news headlines and excerpts and hyperlink to copyrighted articles and photographs cannot be penalized as doing so can be qualified as “fair dealing.” “The decision has enormous implications for Internet users and news organizations as it removes much of the legal uncertainty surrounding sharing information online,” said Internet Law Columnist Michael Geist in an article for the Toronto Star. CCAB releases circulation data for over 200 community newspapers

The Canadian Circulations Audit Board (CCAB), the Canadian division of BPA Worldwide, has released a Community Newspaper TRAC (Trend Report about Circulation) covering 221 community newspapers in all provinces and territories. The report provides top-line circulation data for the period ending March 2012. The CCAB report also includes a market-specific TRAC analysis for 160 community newspapers based in Quebec and eastern Ontario. Read more »

APME’s NewsTrain training series comes to Toronto this September

Associated Press Media Editors (APME) is teaming up with Newspapers Canada and Metroland Media Group to bring its renowned NewsTrain training series to Toronto this September. NewsTrain features two full days of educational workshops for managers and editors by some of the best journalism practitioners in North America—all for just $50 per person (plus HST). The topics covered will include video and social media as well as newsroom management issues. Read more »

Newspapers Canada recently commissioned a local Canadian artist to create a number of newspaper-inspired pieces of artwork to highlight the industry across multiple media sources. These modern pieces are currently on display at the Newspapers Canada office in Toronto. Following a number of requests from our newspaper members, the artwork is now available for purchase. Discounts for CNA/CCNA members at upcoming WAN-IFRA Congress

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) will host the 64th World Newspaper Congress, 19th World Editors Forum, and the Info Services Expo in Kiev, Ukraine from September 2-5, 2012. Speakers from Europe and around the world will offer their insights on a wide variety of innovative newspaper topics including world press trends, new revenue strategies, audience engagement, emerging markets and more. WAN-IFRA is offering members of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association and Canadian Newspaper Association a chance to attend the conference series at a discounted rate, paying just 1390€ instead of the regular 1890€. People

Two newspaper veterans are among the 69 individuals who have been named as the latest recipients of one of the country’s highest civilian honours, the Order of Canada. Toronto Star national columnist Chantal Hébert was recognized for her professional achievements in writing, offering a unique perspective on Canadian politics in English- and French-language media. Halifax Chronicle-Herald columnist Silver Donald Cameron was honoured for his contributions as a journalist, writer, educator, consultant and his community activism. Read more »
