CAJ Ethics Advisory Committee releases new report on the definition of journalism

The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) Ethics Advisory Committee has released a new discussion paper exploring the definition of journalism and the unique role journalists play in modern society. In the report, the panel puts forward a working definition of journalism by determining that journalists can be recognized and distinguished, “not by what they believe or think, but by their actions.” The committee offers a tripartite definition of journalism centred on three specific journalistic conditions. Industry experts will lead NewsTrain training series in Toronto this September

Four industry leaders will share their practical knowledge and offer inspiring new journalism techniques during the NewsTrain educational workshop series in Toronto this September. The two-day program features sessions on a variety of editorial topics led by some of the brightest journalism practitioners in North America: Mandy Jenkins, digital projects editor with Digital First Media; Dean Beeby, deputy bureau chief for The Canadian Press in Ottawa; Emmy award winning videographer Kathy Kieliszewski, deputy director of photo and video for the Detroit Free Press; and Michael Roberts, renowned newsroom trainer, consultant and project director for NewsTrain. Send us photos and videos of your newspaper in action

Newspapers Canada is assembling a compelling video to showcase newspaper readership in Canada. We are asking our member newspapers to submit pictures or video of your newspaper being read or delivered–ideally featuring your unique community or geography. Newspapers Canada will use the materials to produce a powerful industry video to be included in our annual Newspaper Industry Presentation for 2013. Read more »

Globe and Mail online series nominated for Emmy Award

The Globe and Mail has been nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy Award for its online series Inside Hamas. The multimedia investigation into the militant group Hamas was nominated in the "New Approaches to News & Documentary Programming: Current News Coverage" category. The Globe and Mail received two Emmy Awards in previous years for multimedia work concerning Afghanistan. Read more »

Calgary Herald launching expanded weekend edition on August 4

The Calgary Herald has announced plans to expand the Saturday print edition of the daily newspaper. Effective August 4, the Saturday paper will include two new components: the Weekend Life section will showcase a range of lifestyle news and features and the new Insight section will feature analysis, commentary and opinion pages that will provide context to the Herald’s local, national and international news coverage. ‎Transcontinental to sell book printing plants in Louiseville and Sherbrooke

Transcontinental Inc. has announced it will sell its book printing assets to Marquis Book Printing Inc. for an undisclosed amount. Marquis will take ownership of the Transcontinental Gagné printing plant in Louiseville and Transcontinental Métrolitho printing plant in Sherbrooke. Read more »

Hebdos Québec to host annual awards gala on October 26

On October 26, Hebdos Québec will host Les Grands Prix des Hebdos 2012, an annual awards gala in recognition of outstanding work in French-language community newspapers. The event will take place at Hôtel Château Laurier in Quebec City. Read more »

Alvin Brouwer is joining the senior management team at Glacier Media as president, lower mainland publishing. In his new role, Brouwer will be fully responsible for the day to day operations of Glacier's Lower Mainland Group of Newspapers . Brouwer has worked in the newspaper industry for over 30 years in numerous capacities  including sales, sales management and distribution, as well as direct operational responsibility. He most recently served as president, business ventures at Postmedia. Read more »
