Halifax Chronicle Herald owner buys The Antigonish Casket

In Nova Scotia, Brace Capital, an investment firm led by Halifax Chronicle Herald owner Sarah Dennis, has purchased the assets of Casket Printing & Publishing Company for an undisclosed amount. The transaction includes a number of commercial printing companies and two weekly newspapers: The Quad County Extra and The Antigonish Casket. The Casket, which was previously owned by the Roman Catholic Church, has been in business for 160 years and is one of the oldest continuous weeklies in North America. Read more »

TC Transcontinental wins Environmental Innovation Award

TC Transcontinental has been honoured with a Thought Leader award at the fourth annual WhatTheyThink Environmental Innovation Awards. The recognition program is designed to honour companies in the North American graphic arts industry that are implementing innovative environmental solutions. TC Transcontinental was recognized for its efforts toward sustainability and environmentally friendly practices in the graphic arts industry. Read more »

Boomers: Print newspaper lovers

Newspapers Canada recently undertook a study to understand how different devices are being used to read newspapers by various demographic groups. The research shows that eight in 10 "Boomers" (45 to 65 year-olds) have touched a newspaper brand in the last week, with 63 percent reading a print version. Read more »

Industry experts will lead NewsTrain training series in Toronto this September

Four industry leaders will share their practical knowledge and offer inspiring new journalism techniques during the NewsTrain educational workshop series in Toronto this September. The two-day program features sessions on a variety of editorial topics led by some of the brightest journalism practitioners in North America: Mandy Jenkins, digital projects editor with Digital First Media; Dean Beeby, deputy bureau chief for The Canadian Press in Ottawa; Emmy award winning videographer Kathy Kieliszewski, deputy director of photo and video for the Detroit Free Press; and Michael Roberts, renowned newsroom trainer, consultant and project director for NewsTrain. Toronto Star legal reporter Tracey Tyler passed away on Wednesday, July 25 at age 50. Tyler, who worked at the Star for 25 years, first joined the paper in 1987 as an intern before becoming a legal affairs reporter. She is well-known for her 2007 series Access to Justice, which uncovered the excessive legal costs for Canadians seeking justice. Read more »

Long-time Toronto Sun sports columnist Bob Elliott has been named the first Canadian recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). The award is presented annually to a reporter who has made significant contributions to the coverage of the sport. Read more »

Matt Pasquale has been promoted to general manager of the Canadian Circulation Audit Bureau (CCAB). In this newly created position, Pasquale will work from CCAB’s Montreal office to oversee the Quebec-based strategic and operational management for the Canadian division of BPA Worldwide. The Kit, a division of Toronto Star Newspapers Limited, has named Christine Loureiro as the new editor-in-chief for the multiplatform fashion and beauty publication. Loureiro was previously the deputy life editor at the Toronto Star, a publication she first joined in 2007. Read more »

Newspaper Audience Databank Inc. (NADbank), the principal research arm of the Canadian daily newspaper industry, has announced a number of changes to its Board of Directors. Chair of the Board Jean Durocher from La Presse Ltée is retiring. Durocher will be replaced by Bill MacDonald, president and publisher of Metro English Canada. Read more »
