Global newspaper audience on the rise according to latest WAN-IFRA press trends report

The global newspaper audience has grown by 4.2 percent since 2007 according to the latest World Press Trends report released by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). Research shows that over 50 percent of the world’s adult population are newspaper readers, with more than 2.5 billion people reading newspapers in print and more than 600 million in digital form. New case study: McDonalds

McDonalds brand ads featured different food products in an ongoing newspaper campaign. After seeing the ads, consumers’ perception improved dramatically on key communication elements such as “provides modern offerings” and “offers value.” But most importantly, an increase of 60 percent was garnered on “would choose McDonalds if going to a fast food restaurant today.” Read more »

The third issue of The Press and The Courts for 2012 is now available online. Deadline extended for 2012 EPPY Awards

The entry period for the 17th annual EPPY Awards has been extended to midnight on Friday, September 14. Editor and Publisher’s international awards program honours the very best websites, blogs, e-newsletters, videos, social media and other digital offerings created by newspapers and other media-affiliated organizations. National Post to launch new video game website

On September 11, the National Post will launch a new website titled Post Arcade. The site will be dedicated to video games, including industry news, game reviews and commentary. Editorial content will be provided by current FP Tech Desk staff writers as well as prominent video game writer Chad Sapieha, author of The Globe and Mail’s Controller Freak blog. Read more »

People

Prominent print, radio and television journalist Bob Johnstone has passed away at age 82. Johnstone began his journalism career in print, writing for the Toronto Telegram and The Canadian Press before joining the Toronto Star in the 1950s. He worked at the Star for over twenty years and covered a number of editorial areas of interest including courts, city hall and crime reporting. Read more »

Dee Dhaliwal will be leaving her role as director of sales and marketing at North Shore News to become the new publisher for Glacier Media’s Vancouver Courier. Dhaliwal has been with North Shore News for 17 years, beginning in the classifieds and human resources department before taking on the position of director of sales and marketing in 2000.
