Seventh annual National Freedom of Information Audit out now

Newspapers Canada released its seventh annual National Freedom of Information (FOI) Audit on September 24 at the Sunshine Summit in Calgary. The launch of the 2012 report coincides with the beginning of Canadian Right to Know Week. The annual FOI audit reviews the performance of Canadian governments with respect to their access to information regimes.The audit provides the public with an opportunity to see the degree to which our governments are in compliance with their own FOI legislation and facilitates comparisons among jurisdictions. Newly released: 2011 Community Newspaper Revenue Report

Total community newspaper advertising revenue in 2011 is more than $1.2 billion, a 3.1% increase over 2010, according to the latest annual revenue survey conducted for the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA). Print advertising revenue represents the majority of revenue at more than $1.1 billion and the balance is online revenue at $43.7 million. Both print and online revenue have increased over 2010, with online revenues soaring 35.6% over last year. Read more »

NADbank launches new readership data for daily newspapers

Nearly eight in 10 urban adults read daily newspapers every week according to the latest readership study released by Newspaper Audience Databank (NADbank Inc.). The 2011 Mid-Year Study includes daily newspaper readership data from fall, 2011 and spring, 2012 from major Canadian markets including Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver, Ottawa-Gatineau, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Halifax. “The results of this study confirm that daily newspapers continue to be a vital source of news, information and entertainment for consumers,” said NADbank president Anne Crassweller. Globe and Mail honoured with Online Journalism Award

The Globe and Mail has been recognized for its digital storytelling with an Online Journalism Award from the Online News Association. The annual awards honour excellence in digital journalism and are open to media and technology organizations around the world. The Globe won in the Best Feature (medium) category for Breaking Caste, a multimedia series offering an inside look at an all-girls school in India. Read more »

New Newspaper Industry presentation available for publishers

Newspapers Canada has released a new presentation designed for publishers to deliver at local chamber of commerce events. The engaging presentation provides a powerful overview of the strength of the industry and challenges some of the common misconceptions about newspapers in print and online. Publishers are welcome to use it in its entirety or customize the presentation by adding their own unique content. Read more »

Finalists announced for Canadian Online Publishing Awards

A number of Canadian newspapers are among the list of finalists at the 2012 Canadian Online Publishing Awards. The annual awards, administered by Masthead, honour newspapers, magazines, broadcasters and online-only publishers for excellence in digital journalism and design. In the green division, dedicated to newspapers and broadcasters, the Toronto Star leads the pack with 14 nominations. Read more »

OCNA hosts Queen’s Park Day on October 17

On Wednesday, October 17, the Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA) hosts its annual Queen’s Park Day in Toronto. Community newspaper publishers and general managers are invited to attend the event to meet with MPPs, senior civil servants and publishers at Queen's Park to discuss issues concerning the industry and to demonstrate to the provincial government how important newspapers are to the people of Ontario. WAN-IFRA study tour: Strategies for new revenues

From October 22 to 26, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) will host a European study tour for publishers and news executives. The educational initiative, titled Strategies for New Revenues, will investigate niche strategies for publishers and new newspaper products designed to help boost revenues. The tour will travel between London, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Oslo and participants will have the opportunity to visit a number of renowned publications including The Economist, Monocle, The Guardian and Telegraaf Media Group. Sports Media Canada has named National Post columnist Bruce Arthur and long-time Edmonton Journal photographer Ed Kaiser as two of the three recipients of the 2012 George Gross Media Awards for sports photography, broadcasting and writing. Read more »

Nanaimo Daily News deputy editor Philip Wolf will become the paper’s interim managing editor following the departure of Cale Cowan. Cowan, who began at the News in 2005, recently accepted an editorial management potion at the Times Colonist in Victoria. Read more »
