National Newspaper Awards to accept submissions from online news organizations

Canada’s National Newspaper Awards (NNA) will now be open to online news organizations such as The Tyee and the Huffington Post. The annual awards program has celebrated excellence in daily newspaper publishing in Canada since 1949. Online-only entrants will be required to submit information to the NNA Board of Governors who will determine if the organizations meet the standards of daily journalism “as practiced by legacy newspapers and their online operations for the past 64 years.” Read more »

Global news organizations condemn persecution of Turkish journalists

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the World Editors Forum have released a letter urging the Turkish government to release 41 journalists who are currently being imprisoned in the country on terrorism-related charges. In a letter to Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the international news organizations accuse the government of attempting to intimidate the press and breaching the right to freedom of expression. Newspapers 24/7 research highlights—Business Decision Makers: News Junkies

Newspapers Canada recently undertook a study to understand how different devices are being used to read newspapers by various demographic groups. Business Decision Makers—defined as professionals, senior management/executives and business owners/self-employed—love newspapers in print, on the web and via mobile (tablet/e-reader and phone) more than the average newspaper reader. In the mornings, they gobble up print, but from mid-morning on, website visits are strong and steady for the rest of the day. Read more »

Newspapers Carrier Day ads now available

Each year, newspapers recognize the importance and hard work of newspaper carriers around the world on International Newspaper Carrier Day. On Saturday, October 13, newspapers will come together to honour to the men and women who make an important contribution to the industry. Daily and community newspapers from across Canada may choose to commemorate Carrier Day in a variety of different ways, some by placing an ad in their newspaper, others by organizing special events or activities. Newspapers Canada and the Canadian Circulation Management Association are pleased to provide a variety of International Newspaper Carrier Day ads for association members. Read more »

The Province creates new website for South Asian community

In Vancouver, The Province has launched a new website targeted at the South Asian community in B.C. and beyond. According to an article in The Province, VancouverDesi.com will focus on “informing, engaging and entertaining one of the nation's most influential and diverse ethnic groups.” Read more »

QCNA hosts Professional Day on October 26

On Friday, October 26, the Quebec Community Newspapers Association (QCNA) will host a professional development day for its members. The day-long event includes a networking lunch and two educational sessions: a morning session on the essentials of photojournalism with award-winning photojournalist Peter McCabe and an afternoon session titled, ‘Practical Guide to the Quebec Access To Information Act’ with Montreal media lawyer Mark Bantey. Long-time Nanaimo Daily News staff member Walter Cordery has died at age 54. Cordery first joined the paper in 1989 after graduating from the journalism program at Langara College in Vancouver. Cordery covered a number of issues during his 23 years as a reporter and columnist at the Daily News, his favourite topics being crime and politics in Nanimo. Read more »

In September, Paul Samyn became the new editor at the Winnipeg Free Press. Samyn had been serving as interim editor following the departure of former editor Margo Goodhand in July. He began his newspaper career at the Free Press in 1988 as a reporter. Over his 24 years with the daily, Samyn covered numerous political and international events and served as the paper’s Ottawa bureau chief for a decade and as the city editor since 2007. Read more »

Eric Morrison has been appointed senior vice-president of editorial for Sun Media, a subsidiary of Quebecor. According to an article in the Toronto Sun, Morrison will “lead a reorganization of the company's news operations across all platforms.” In his new role, Morrison will be responsible for a restructured national editorial team that will work to integrate Sun Media’s English-language news network including newspapers, websites and broadcast channels. Adam Giles is the new regional director of advertising at The Expositor in Brantford, ON. He first joined the paper in 1999 as a small-business sales representative and has worked in a number of different roles including retail sales representative and circulation manager. Most recently, Giles has served as the paper’s new business development manager since early 2012. Read more »
